Mawingu Supports Digital Healthcare at Nep Community Hospital in Garissa

Mawingu internet connectivity is helping Nep Community Hospital in Garissa Township access digital healthcare services, manage patient records more efficiently and serve more patients through the Social Health Authority (SHA). Since the hospital was connected in July 2025, reliable internet has become an important part of its daily operations.

A patient visits a hospital for treatment, but much of the work that makes that care possible happens away from the consultation room. Medical records must be available, healthcare workers need access to information, and administrative systems must function when patients need them.

At Nep Community Hospital in Garissa Township, these processes have become easier to manage with reliable internet connectivity. Since 30 July 2025, the facility has been using Mawingu internet to access digital services, retrieve patient information, and connect to online medical resources.

For a hospital that previously depended on physical patient records and had no access to SHA services, the change is significant. Connectivity has given the institution access to digital systems that now support both its administrative work and its ability to serve patients.

From paper records to faster access to patient information

Before Mawingu connected the hospital, Nep Community Hospital relied on hard-copy patient records. When staff needed to retrieve a patient’s information, they had to work through physical files, a process the hospital describes as time-consuming.

The challenge extended beyond record keeping. Without internet access, the facility could not access Social Health Authority services, limiting its ability to serve patients through the scheme.

These were not simply technology gaps. They affected how quickly staff could retrieve information and which digital healthcare services the institution could access.

With Mawingu connectivity now in place, the hospital uses an online application to store and retrieve patient information. Staff can access records more quickly, saving time that would otherwise be spent searching through physical files.

For healthcare workers managing different cases throughout the day, having patient information readily accessible makes an important difference to the flow of work. The hospital reports that faster retrieval supports the management of patient cases and helps staff work more efficiently.

How internet connectivity is expanding access to SHA services

One of the most significant changes reported by Nep Community Hospital is its ability to access the Social Health Services (SHA) platform.

According to hospital administrator Ahmed Osman, internet connectivity has enabled the facility to access SHA services, allowing more patients to receive treatment through the scheme.

He also reports an increase in hospital revenue through SHA. The relationship is straightforward: without internet access, the hospital could not operate the digital services required to participate in the scheme. Connectivity has therefore opened an important channel through which the facility can serve eligible patients and generate revenue.

This matters because digital access is increasingly tied to how healthcare services are administered. A hospital may have qualified staff and the capacity to provide treatment, but access to the systems that support patient registration and healthcare administration is also essential.

For Nep Community Hospital, Mawingu internet connectivity has helped bridge that gap, making access to SHA services part of its everyday operations.

Giving healthcare workers access to medical information

The benefits of connectivity are also reaching the medical staff who rely on information to support their work.

Through different online medical platforms, healthcare workers at Nep Community Hospital can access telemedical information related to diagnosis and pharmaceutical services. This gives them additional resources to consult as they carry out their responsibilities.

Access to online medical information is particularly relevant in an environment where healthcare knowledge and guidance continue to evolve. Reliable internet makes it easier for staff to reach digital resources that can support their professional work.

The hospital identifies this improved access to medical information, alongside faster patient record retrieval and SHA access, as a key benefit of its connection.

A wider picture of healthcare connectivity in underserved communities

Nep Community Hospital is part of a broader picture of how reliable internet is supporting healthcare institutions in underserved parts of Kenya.

In Wajir East,  Volunteer Nursing Home is using Mawingu connectivity to support its daily operations. Before connecting to Mawingu in October 2025, the facility experienced slow internet that made browsing and other online activities difficult. Staff now report faster browsing, improved connectivity, easier reporting and better client satisfaction. The nursing home also identifies cost savings as one of the benefits.

The two institutions have different needs. At Volunteer Nursing Home, connectivity supports browsing, reporting and access to online services. At Nep Community Hospital, it is helping the facility access SHA services, retrieve patient information and consult online medical resources.

Both experiences show why healthcare connectivity cannot be measured by the installation of internet infrastructure alone. Its value becomes clearer when we look at the work healthcare institutions can carry out with a reliable connection.

The Mawingu Foundation has also supported connectivity across 17 public health facilities in Makueni County and expanded internet access to 25 clinics in Laikipia County, helping extend digital access to healthcare facilities in different parts of the country.

These efforts form part of the wider work documented in the Mawingu 2025 Impact Report, which records 480 new community anchor institutions connected during 2025, including schools and dispensaries.

For Mawingu, the purpose of connectivity goes beyond making an institution online. It is about enabling people and organisations to access opportunities and services that may otherwise remain out of reach.

Mawingu CEO Farouk Ramji captures this approach:

“We seek to help our customers access new opportunities for work, education, entertainment, and social connections through the power of the Internet.”

At Nep Community Hospital, that vision is reflected in practical changes. Staff can retrieve patient information faster, access online medical resources and use digital systems that enable the hospital to serve patients through SHA.

The Mawingu Foundation works to extend affordable, reliable connectivity to underserved communities and institutions. By connecting facilities such as Nep Community Hospital, the Foundation helps create the conditions for healthcare workers and institutions to make greater use of digital services.

What a connected hospital makes possible

In Garissa Township, the difference at Nep Community Hospital is visible in the systems its staff can now access and the time they can save in their daily work.

The hospital has moved from relying entirely on physical patient records to using an online application for information retrieval. It has gained access to SHA services, which the administrator says has contributed to increased revenue and enabled more patients to receive treatment through the scheme. Medical staff can also access online platforms for medical information.

These changes may happen behind the scenes, but they matter to the people who depend on the hospital. Efficient information management and access to digital healthcare services help the institution carry out its work with fewer barriers.

Mawingu’s role is to provide the connectivity that makes these activities possible. What the hospital does with that connection is where the impact takes shape.

A reliable internet connection does not replace healthcare workers, medical expertise or the care patients need. But it can strengthen the systems that support them. At Nep Community Hospital, Mawingu connectivity is helping make those systems more accessible, one digital service at a time.
